As reported by Faithwire, a federal judge has temporarily halted policies in a Washington state school district that allegedly targeted a Christian student ministry with discriminatory restrictions not imposed on secular groups.

The case centers on LifeWise Academy, a Christian nonprofit that provides off-campus Bible instruction to public school students whose parents voluntarily enroll them in the program. The organization filed suit against Everett Public Schools, located north of Seattle, after district officials imposed a series of restrictions that attorneys argued violated the First Amendment’s protections for religious liberty and free expression.

According to court filings and reporting, LifeWise had operated peacefully within the district until opposition intensified following comments from school board member Charles Adkins during a December board meeting. Adkins openly acknowledged hostility toward the Christian ministry, accusing the organization of promoting what he described as “homophobic” views and “authoritarian theocracy.”

In response, the district reportedly imposed several rules uniquely affecting LifeWise. Parents participating in the Bible program were allegedly required to sign weekly permission slips rather than a single annual form used for other organizations. The ministry was also prevented from participating in school resource fairs and barred from distributing flyers on school property despite secular groups being allowed to do so. Additionally, students were reportedly required to keep LifeWise materials — including Bibles — sealed inside envelopes while on campus.

Late last month, U.S. District Judge Lauren King issued a preliminary injunction partially siding with LifeWise and its legal team from First Liberty Institute. The ruling ordered Everett Public Schools to stop selectively restricting the Christian program while the case proceeds through the courts. The district must now permit LifeWise to participate in community events, distribute materials under the same standards as secular organizations, and use semester-long permission slips comparable to those used by other extracurricular programs.

Jeremy Dys, senior counsel for First Liberty Institute, argued the district’s conduct represented unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination against Christian beliefs. Joel Penton, founder and CEO of LifeWise Academy, said families have embraced the program because parents want biblical character instruction available to their children during the school day.

The dispute reflects a growing national battle over religious liberty in public institutions, particularly in states where Christian organizations increasingly face pressure for maintaining biblical convictions regarding morality, family, and faith. Supporters of the ruling say the Constitution does not permit government officials to single out religious viewpoints for harsher treatment simply because secular authorities disagree with Christian doctrine.

For many Christian families, the case also highlights broader concerns that public institutions are becoming openly hostile toward expressions of biblical faith while elevating secular ideologies that conflict with traditional Christian teaching. The court’s injunction, while temporary, represents a significant legal rebuke against policies critics argue treated Christianity as uniquely suspect or unwelcome in the public square.
