In common slang, “86” can mean to remove, reject, or dispose of something, and critics have argued that when paired with “47,” the phrase can be understood as a reference to harming or eliminating the 47th president. Supporters of President Trump have pointed to previous instances in which “8647” has appeared on signs, merchandise, and social media posts as evidence that the phrase is often used as shorthand for wishing death upon the president. According to Reuters, a photographer positioned atop the Washington Monument observed the unusual display etched into the grass near the World War II Memorial shortly before authorities arrived on the scene. The marking appeared to contain the numbers eight, six, and seven, although the number four was reportedly not clearly defined.
Federal officials moved quickly to assess the situation. U.S. Park Police officers responded to the area alongside members of the National Guard as investigators examined the site and worked to determine how the marking was created.
