Actress Hayden Panettiere reportedly ingested a single oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl before her death last month, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the ongoing investigation.

As reported by The Western Journal, sources told TMZ that the 36-year-old actress had allegedly obtained black-market prescription drugs through a longtime dealer in Los Angeles. Investigators are now attempting to determine where the suspected counterfeit pill came from and who supplied it.

The account remains preliminary. A final toxicology report has not yet been released, meaning the official cause of death has not been established. Authorities previously said Panettiere was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on Aug. 16. An autopsy found no traumatic injuries contributing to her death.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is reportedly involved in the investigation, and authorities are focusing attention on a potential drug supplier. Panettiere’s former boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was present when she died and later met with DEA officials, according to reports. Hickerson has not been identified as a suspect in her death.

Panettiere had spoken publicly for years about addiction and alcohol abuse. In a 2022 interview cited by The Western Journal, she said someone on her team began giving her so-called “happy pills” when she was just 15, an experience she later connected to the opening stages of her addiction. She said her substance use became increasingly difficult to control as she grew older.

Her death is a sobering reminder that fentanyl has transformed illicit drug use into an even more lethal gamble. The DEA warns that counterfeit pills can contain fentanyl in quantities capable of killing a person, while users may have no reliable way to distinguish a counterfeit tablet from a legitimate prescription medication. The agency’s “One Pill Can Kill” campaign has emphasized that as little as 2 milligrams of fentanyl can constitute a potentially deadly dose.

Every human life bears God-given value, and stories like this should move families and communities toward vigilance rather than indifference. Addiction brings devastating consequences not only to those trapped by it, but also to children, parents and loved ones left behind. Panettiere is survived by her daughter.

The investigation remains active, and the toxicology findings will be critical in establishing whether fentanyl was in fact responsible for her death.
