A Washington state public school district has agreed to pay $275,000 in attorneys’ fees, publicly apologize to Christian families, and revise its policies after a religious freedom lawsuit challenged its treatment of a voluntary Bible education program.

The settlement represents a significant victory for parental rights and religious liberty, reinforcing the constitutional principle that government officials cannot single out religious organizations for unfavorable treatment simply because of their Christian beliefs.

As reported by CBN News, Everett School District reached an agreement with LifeWise Academy, a nonprofit organization that provides Bible-based education to public school students during regular school hours. Under the settlement, the district must pay legal fees, provide religious liberty training to its school board, modify policies governing religious activities, and publish a written apology acknowledging the harm caused to participating families.

The dispute began after school officials imposed restrictions that LifeWise argued unfairly discriminated against its program.

According to LifeWise Academy’s settlement announcement, those restrictions included requiring parents to renew permission for their children’s participation every week, excluding the organization from certain community events and promotional opportunities, and requiring students to keep Bibles and other program materials sealed inside envelopes in their backpacks.

LifeWise challenged those policies with legal assistance from First Liberty Institute and Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP. In April 2026, a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction against the district. The settlement announced October 14 resolves the litigation.

LifeWise Academy operates under a legal framework commonly known as released-time religious instruction. Students may leave public school property during the school day to receive privately funded religious education with parental permission.

The program does not receive public school funding, and participation is entirely voluntary.

The U.S. Supreme Court recognized the constitutionality of qualifying released-time religious instruction in its 1952 decision in Zorach v. Clauson.

For Christian families, the distinction is important: parents are not demanding that public schools conduct Bible classes. They are seeking the freedom to arrange religious instruction for their own children without discriminatory government interference.

The controversy also involved statements made during school board meetings that participating families considered hostile to their religious beliefs. In its public apology, the district acknowledged that remarks concerning LifeWise were offensive and hurtful to families participating in the program.

As reported by Baptist Press, the district also recognized that its policies had created difficulties for students and parents exercising their religious freedom.

LifeWise founder and CEO Joel Penton welcomed the settlement, emphasizing that the organization’s goal was equal treatment rather than confrontation. Speaking with CBN News, Penton explained that families participating in the program deserved the same freedoms afforded to other families. The outcome also raises questions about government accountability. When public officials impose unconstitutional or discriminatory restrictions, the resulting legal costs can ultimately become a burden on the taxpayers who fund those institutions.

From a biblical perspective, parents bear the primary responsibility for teaching their children moral and spiritual truth. Deuteronomy 6:6–7 instructs believers to diligently teach God’s commandments to their children throughout everyday life. That responsibility does not disappear when a child enters a public school. The Everett settlement offers a reminder that religious liberty is not merely the freedom to worship privately. It also protects the ability of families to practice their faith, educate their children, and participate in public life without government discrimination.

For Christian parents nationwide, the case demonstrates the importance of defending constitutional freedoms while holding public institutions accountable to the families they serve.
