William “Bill” Stevenson, 77, the former husband of First Lady Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder after weeks of investigation into the death of his 64-year-old wife, Linda Stevenson, Delaware authorities announced.
New Castle County Police responded to a reported domestic dispute on the night of December 28, 2025, at the Stevensons’ home in Oak Hill, a community near Wilmington, Delaware. When officers arrived shortly before midnight, they found Linda Stevenson unresponsive on the living room floor. Despite efforts by first responders to administer life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following a grand jury indictment filed in early February 2026, William Stevenson was taken into custody without incident on February 2 and charged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s death. He is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $500,000 bail.

Officials have not yet released detailed information about the exact cause or manner of Linda Stevenson’s death. Law enforcement has described the case as the result of an extensive investigation, but a motive has not been publicly disclosed.
Background and Public Interest
The case has drawn widespread public attention because of Stevenson’s past marriage to Jill Biden. Stevenson married Jill Biden (then Jill Jacobs) in 1970 when she was 18 and he was 23. The couple divorced in 1975 after five years of marriage. Jill Biden later married Joe Biden, who became the 46th President of the United States.
Linda Stevenson’s life and activities outside the home have been less public, and initial media reports describe her as a long-time partner of William Stevenson. Local outlets noted that after his divorce from Jill Biden, Stevenson remained in the Wilmington, Delaware, area and built a life that included owning a longtime local establishment.
Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the case, and further details may emerge as the prosecution proceeds through the Delaware court system.
